Myth #1

“140 seconds is 1:40.” Nope. It's 2:20.

The most common mix-up at the bar, explained in 20 seconds.

A minute is 60 seconds. So 60 + 60 = 120 seconds = 2:00. Add 20 more and you get 140 seconds = 2 minutes 20 seconds (2:20).

1:40 is 1 minute 40 seconds: 60 + 40 = 100 seconds. Stop at 1:40 and you're still 40 seconds short.

The goal on the clock is 2:20.

Myth #2

“You can't switch grips or use chalk.” You can.

What's legal on the bar, straight from the official rules.

Allowed: overhand, underhand, or mixed grip; changing grip during the hang; and chalk.

Required: two hands on the bar at all times. Your feet can't touch the ground or the sides.

Not allowed: muscle-ups, resting your chin on the bar, clasping your hands together, or fish hooks.

The judge's call is final.

Myth #3

“Only big, strong grown-ups win.” The leaderboard says otherwise.

Real results from the winners board.

Our very first winner was Gracie Sanchez, who hung 100 seconds (1:40) to win $100. Since then, 15 people have beaten the bar.

Winners include Grayson at 7 years old (2:20), Ellie, an 11-year-old gymnast (2:23), and Anthony at 14.

Anyone 17 or under needs a parent or guardian present to give permission and sign the waiver.

Tips

Simple grip tips before you step up

General tips, not medical advice. Hang at your own risk.

  • Use the chalk. Dry hands slip less than sweaty ones, and chalk is allowed.
  • Use the grip switch. Changing between overhand, underhand, and mixed is legal, so plan when you'll switch.
  • Practice ahead of time. If you want to train, try short dead hangs on a pull-up bar and build up gradually.
  • Know the number. You need 2:20 on the clock, not 1:40.
  • Listen to your body. If something hurts (not just burns), let go. No prize is worth an injury.
